Jesus and the Children

While its official title is 'Jesus and the Children,' artist Randi Stewart describes the mural's central image as the 'Three-Story Jesus.'

In the summer of 2020, Randi was commissioned to paint a mural on the side of the Christian Church of Connellsville to increase the city's image as a public art community.  Created in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, this brilliantly colored, lively rendition of Jesus and the children provided much hope for the city and our community.

The mural was painted on the blank outer wall that once abutted the old YMCA building.  Randi worked closely with church members on the design in order to convey their vision.  She first created a computer image of the mural and then projected it onto the wall in large scale.  She rented a 50-foot boom to be able to reach the top of the building.  The painting was completed in just 15 days using brushes, rollers, and spray paint.

Randi believes that public art is largely transformative for a community in many ways; she says that art is a power, a visual, unfiltered language that can be used to express the emotion and intellect of a community.  She focuses on doing large-scale mural projects that make an impact.  This was Randi's largest mural to date.

'Jesus and the Children' was dedicated to the glory of God on August 16, 2020.

The mural was funded by the Fayette County Cultural Trust, the estate of Michael Prestia, and the Allegheny Foundation.
